This is a reprint of a rare book by a Dagestanian historian Kh.-M. Khashaev published in 1965. This book is a collection of archival materials about the common laws (adat) of peasant communities, "free" communities. These laws regulated practically all aspects of community life and defined the unique social, economic, spiritual and ethnic life of the region. The documents included in this volume also help to understand the legislation and law enforcement process of the mountaineers of old Dagestan.
