This monograph is about one of the most notable German writers of the 1950-1970s Alfred Andersch (1914-1980). The author of this monograph is a literary critic and a translator of German. She describes the post-war generation of young Germans, who in the face of the collapse of their world painfully searched for new guidelines and ways of the artistic interpretation of reality. Among the novels analyzed are “Zanzibar, or the last reason”, “Efraim”, “Winterspelt”. The existentialist aspects of the writer’s outlook are examined. A supplement includes Andersch’s documentary narrative “Cherries of freedom”, in which he tells about his double desertion: first from the Communist Party in 1933 and then, in 1944, from the Fascist Wermacht.
