In her new book V.K.Afanasiyeva,a well known Russian historian, the leading researcher of the State Hermitage Orient Department, studies the limits of human perception. She bases her research on the materials of pictorialism and literature of Ancient Mesopotamia. Starting out from the mysterious and absorbing ancient Babylonian legend about the flight of a man on an eagle, the author shows an almost two thousand year evolution of such mythological units as “human coition – the snake”, “the eagle – the snake”, “the knowledge of Anzud, a lion-headed eagle – the snake’s knowledge”. She also investigates how and in which magic practices these mythological units were expressed. Appendices with texts of the Mesopotamian myths. Bibliography. 153 tables of illustrations.
