The monograph covers the history of clubs in Russia from the end of the 18th - early 20th centuries. The author discovers a connection between the club culture and processes of forming and development of public opinion based on the daily mutual penetration of ordinary consciousness of elite social groups, and social and political philosophy. Rozental examines the structure, types and functions of the clubs, their role in the dialogue between Russia and the West, their relationships with government and other public associations and their role in transformation of Russian society. Special attention is paid to political clubs, which appeared in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century - at the same period, when a multi-party system and the State Duma of Russia did.
