This book is about twentieth century Jewish writers from several countries whose works have been translated into English. The first chapter deals with the novel Sholem-Aleichem (Rabinovitch) "Tevye der Milkhiker". Chapter two studies the contribution of Jewish writers to the literature of modernism, first of all Kafka. The third one is about Jewish literature of the Russian revolution. The fourth and fifth deals with books written in Poland and about Poland: brothers Israel and Issak Zinger, and their sister Ester Kreitman. The seventh and eights chapters are about the literature of the Zionists and Jewish literature in Israel. The ninth and tenth chapters are about American Jewish writers and the revival of Hebrew as the Jewish national language. Comments and name index. Ruth R. Wisse is a professor of Jewish literature at Harvard University.
