Velikii Ustiug is an ancient town in the Russian North near the city of Vologda, a reservation of landmarks of Russian architecture and arts and craft treasures of the 17th-18th centuries. The town was founded at the confluence of the Sukhona and Yug rivers, in the mid-11th century, as an outpost of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality amidst the vast Novgorod possessions in Primorye. It has been an icon-painting center from the beginning. This photo album of the architectural monuments and their interiors in the town is made by professor William Brumfeld (Tulane University). He is one of the leading specialists in the Russian North. 218 illustrations, most of them in color. Chronology of the town of Velikii Ustiug. Parallel text and captions in Russian and English. Glossy paper. (1 kg)
