General Vasilii Gurko, the son of a field marshal hero of 1812 war, made his military career from division commander to front commander during WWI. This memoir describes the most significant operations of this war, the spirit of the Russian army and the society. Gurko avoids rash conclusions, but rather gives a deep analysis of the political and social trends in Russian and the army on the eve of the Bolshevik revolution. He left Russia in September 1917.
