In olden times Russians traveled to other countries literally on their feet. The first travel reports about Byzantium, Palestine, Egypt, and other foreign lands were made by pedestrians: from Father Superior Daniil to Afanasii Nikitin. Based on their stories and other historical sources, the author studies their specific routes, forms and methods of information espionage, transportation occasionally used, time span of their travels, and other details relevant to their trips. Texts of travels are published based on manuscripts of the Orthodox Palestine Society of the 19th century. Bibliography, name and geographic indices, maps and lexicon of time and distance.
