The outstanding romantic writer Vladimir Fedorovich Odoevskii (1804-1869), a statesman (1840-1860s), the founder of the Rumiantsev Museum (currently the Russian State Library), was assigned by Alexander II to play the role of cultural attache to the emperor’s aunt, Grand Duchess Mariia Pavlovna, Grossherzogin an Weimars. This book includes his letters about Russian cultural life to the Grand Duchess in 1856-1859. Half of the book is taken by a biographical essay about the less known side of Odoevskii`s life, his service as a statesman, and his relations with Grand Duchess Mariia Pavlovna. It is based on materials from her archive opened to researchers in the late 1950s. Also available by Odoevskii: Zapiski dlia Moego Prapravnuka (2006).
