This is a fictional biography of Count Nikolai Rumiantsev (1754-1826), a State Chancellor of Russia (1807-1814), historian and the founder of his own museum that later became the core of the Russian State Library (Moscow), the largest in Europe and the second in the world in the volume of its collections. He was born in the small town of Gomel, and inherited it from his father field marshal P.A. Rumiantsev-Zadunaiskii. For almost his whole life N. Rumiantsev kept building and improving this town. The story of his life is told on the background of the history of White Russia (Belorussia) and his town Gomel.
