The historian of art from St. Petersburg studies the phenomenon of "local" in modern culture. The book consists of two parts. the first one is about the St. Petersburg painters of the late 1980s-2000, so called "post-communist" art. It is written for the western readers and contains some references to local realities as an attempt to look at this art as an outsider. The second part is a collection of essays about the painters who the author qualifies as archaic and innovative at the same time. 16 black-and-white illustrations.
