The concept "Moscow - The Third Rome" meant mostly that Moscow (Rus) became the only guardian of the Christian faith after the fall of Constantinopol. According to the author of this book, this concept was interpreted by Russian tsars not as an eschatological idea (mission) but as a purely political one. The idea of the Great Greek-Russian eastern empire was the main reason for the rash unification of Russian and Greek Church practice, which lately was called the Nikon`s reform. Kutuzov, the Russian church historian and regent of the Spasskii Cathedral in Moscow, compares this reform with an ideological diversion and shows in detail its negative influence on the practice of the Russian Orthodox religion and liturgy.
