Buddhism and its study are not new to Russia. It began at least 150 years ago when the Russian empire expanded into Central Asia. Buddhism became one of the many religions and spiritual traditions of the empire. In this research the author traces the history of Buddhist Studies in Russia and its main results. Each theoretical paragraph is followed by a supplement where rare original studies, lectures, and field reports by Russian Buddhist scholars from the archives of the Institute of Oriental Studies are published for the first time. The book may be viewed as a brief anthology on the subject. Bibliography, footnotes, list of abbreviations.
