This book is about democratic milieu of the 1980s-1990s, who were also called "neformaly" (informal youth groups) and "dissidents". The author is a historian of modern Russia and a politician. The book belongs to the genre of testimony. The people of the democratic circle were quite candid in the aspiration for the "correct" socialism, but then - while reconstructing ideologies from old books - with equal candidacy they all took different paths. The unofficial organizations constituted an authentic democratic environment at the time of the Sturm and Drang that marked the late period of Gorbachev`s perestroika. They took to the streets, securing the success of mass actions. This book is a history of the democratic movement and their effort to create their own parties and participation in the institutions of power.
