This monograph studies the forming of the Novgorod architectural school of the 12th-early 13th centuries from the standpoint of construction skill. The work is based on classical works of A. Rappoport and goes further. It accumulates the vast information received during the recent archeological and restoration works, collections in museums, and the results of laboratory studies. The author portrays the most important moments of the Novgorod construction art and supports his conclusions with written sources of that period, pictorial images on walls, epigraphic materials, and construction materials of existing buildings. The evolution of construction art is analyzed against the background of the historical and political context which influenced this art. Contents and summary in English.
