This book is a collection of diaries, memoirs and letters of a village archpriest Georgii Edel`shtein. It tells about his years of service in several rural eparchies in central Russia in 1979-1990s, his thoughts about the fate of the Russian Orthodox Church, relations between the Moscow patriarchy and other branches of the Church. Edel`shtein is concerned with issues which trouble the minds of many Russian believers: How could the Church have cooperated with the atheist government for 70 years? When and why did it change its name from "the Orthodox Church of the Russian Empire" to "Russian Orthodox Church"? Is it possible to consecrate martyrs without repentance before them? Why are all the decisions of the Russian Synod of 1917-1918 forgotten? Why are bishops assigned by the Synod but not elected? The author is seeking answers to all these issues and more.
