This book by the notable philologist Oleg Trubachev (1930- 2001) revises traditional views of the formation of the language and culture of the early Slavs, their ethnogenesis and original homeland. While based on a thorough investigation of the world stock of all Slavic languages and their etymology, the author puts forward his own conception of a deeper chronology of the formation of Common Slavic in Europe (the Danubian homeland of the Slavs) and on an Indo-European scale. Supplement includes several of Trubachev`s last articles. O. Trubachev was the editor of the multi-volume Etymological Dictionary of Slavic languages. His other book, Indo-Aryan in the Northern Black Sea Region: The Reconstruction of Language Relics: Etymological Dictionary (1999), is also available.
