Dissemination of Ukrainian and Belorussian manuscripts of the XVI-XVII centuries played a significant role in the process of "Europeanizing" Russian spiritual life and spreading secular West European culture. The Muscovite secular and church authorities launched a political campaign to officially ban free dissemination of "Lithuanian" printed and handwritten books. This monograph offers a new explanation of the forces behind this campaign based on an analysis of archival documents of several Old Russian Archives kept in the RGADA. Bibliographic references.
