This book by Russian historian and archeologist Artemii Artsikhovskii (1902-1978) was first published in 1944. It considers Old Russian miniatures as a historical source about: towns and their economies, customs, military art, historic figures, social symbols. The author studies numerous illuminated chronicles and other illustrations. Famous Russian historians M. Tikhomirov, N. Voronin, and B. Rybakov recognized the high value of this study for its innovative methodology and fundamentalism. The monograph analyzes miniatures of several chronicles and lives of Russian saints and showed their value as historical sources. Bibliographic references. 55 illustrations.
