This is a documentary novel about the Russian Patriarch Ioasaf the Second (d. 1672) of Belorussian descent, former archimandrite of the Vladimir Rozhdestvenskii Monastery (1654-1656), then Trinity-Sergii Monastery (1656-1666). Iosaf became the eighth Russian patriarch in 1667. His time was a time of a Russian-Polish war (1654-1667), dissent in the Russian Orthodox Church, and a time of peasant rebellions.
