N.P. Ogarev (1813-1877) left his first wife a large sum of money that disappeared. Where is it? Who took it? Among the people involved in this story were many famous personalities: besides Ogarev and his wife, A. Gertsen, Nik. Nekrasov, A. Panaeva, Ivan Panaev, and N. Chernyshevskii. Iakov Cherniak (1898-1955) investigated this story not as a prosecutor but a scholar of the social traditions and norms of that time. He showed how economic interests defined the behavior of people who were moral leaders of that time: writers and ideologues. Appendices.
