This monograph studies the peasant family and farm in Terek (Terskaia) Oblast in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. This oblast included several Caucasian regions and peoples: Kabarda, Balkariia, Osetiia, Ingushetiia, Chechnya, Kalmykiia, and areas of Cossack settlement. This area was also known as the Terskaia Soviet Republic (1918), Severo-Kavkazsk Soviet Republic, Gorskaia ASSR. The author analyzes the socio-demographic processes in this territory based on results of two censuses (1897 and 1920), dynamics of the local economy before and during WW1: 1914-1920, its demographic consequences.
