The city of St. Petersburg is 300 years old, but the land`s history reaches far into the middle ages. The Neva estuary was first settled by early Balts, Swedes and Finns. This book focuses on the early inhabitants of the area, builders of the town of Nyen, the predecessor of St. Petersburg, and the influence of their habits, beliefs and superstitions on the modern city and its folklore, their blend with the Orthodox Church and urban mythology over the period from Peter the Great to the "Silver Age". It is based on vast numbers of facts collected by local historians, as well as on Swedish and Finnish sources. The author offers his own vision of the sacred structure of St. Petersburg and its influence on the minds and hearts of several generations of settlers.
