This book about the everyday life of St. Petersburg in the second half of the nineteenth century is by the Russian journalist Vladimir Mikhnevich (1841-1899) who worked for the newspaper Novosti for over twenty years. He, one of the first in Russian journalism, used official statistical data, in particular, the results of the first census of the Russian capital and data collected by other Russian social scientists. The book includes chapters on the quality of life, criminal situation, and public morality. Also included is Mikhnevich`s essay about the Russian legal system of his time. Comments by the author.
